A scenic detour from Gisborne

A river day with two distinct stops

Travel roughly 50 kilometres north-west of Gisborne along Wharekopae Road towards Eastwoodhill Arboretum and the small community of Rere. From there, the Wharekopae River leads to two different experiences: Rere Falls and the Rere Rockslide.

The falls are a broad, picturesque cascade around five metres high. The nearby rockslide is a smooth, approximately 60-metre natural chute shaped by the river. These are separate parts of the river, so plan time for both rather than expecting to slide over the waterfall.

Things to do

See Rere Falls

Walk to the waterfall and enjoy the view from beside the cascade. Some visitors walk behind the falling water, but wet rock can be slippery. Take your time, wear secure footwear and avoid the water’s edge when conditions are uncertain.

Try the rockslide

The smooth channel can be used with suitable inflatables such as a boogie board or inner tube. Water levels, surface conditions and river flow vary, so inspect the route first and follow current local advice. Children should be closely supervised and every visitor should choose an activity suited to their ability.

Pause for a picnic

The river setting offers space to slow down, picnic and, when conditions are suitable, enjoy the swimming area. Pack out everything you bring and leave the riverside as you found it.

Add Eastwoodhill Arboretum

Eastwoodhill Arboretum is about 35 kilometres north-west of Gisborne. Its extensive collection of native and exotic trees is explored through walking tracks and gardens, making it a natural companion to a Rere day.
